Longhouse Publishing understands that a key objective of the Truth & Reconciliation process is for the general public to learn of the history of Residential Schools and the experiences of survivors of these schools, their families and others involved. This book directly addresses this topic, the focus of which is the 64 testimonials of 46 former students who attended the School from the 1940s thru the 1980s.

Though these former students represent a fraction of the children who attended the Mission School, their words paint a vivid picture of their lives at St. Mary’s and what followed them when they left.

Description

A 5-chapter narrative takes the reader through a brief history of the Oblates’ journey to America and eventually British Columbia, highlighting federal government involvement at the turn of the 19th century, and first-hand stories from the point-of-view of these children, Elders at the time of their testimonials. Both poignant and tragic, and not always what we want to hear, these testimonials will hopefully lead us to a better understanding of the residential school tragedy, and help the healing process to advance. 89 archival photographs of the children of St. Mary’s accompany these testimonials.
