Interview excerpts from 46 former students who attended St. Mary’s Indian Residential School in Mission, British Columbia during the 1940s, 50s through to the 80s form the backbone of this book. Though they represent a fraction of the children who attended the Mission School, their words paint a vivid picture of their lives at St. Mary’s, and what followed them when they left.

In addition to first-hand stories from the point of view of these children—Elders at the time of their interviews—a 5-chapter narrative takes the reader through a brief history of the Oblates’ journey to America and eventually British Columbia, and includes an insightful and readable account of the devastating relationships that have shaped Indigenous history.

We want to acknowledge the high sensitivity behind this work, which can trigger the reader in various ways. Please be gentle with yourself as you embark upon this path of understanding the truth behind these stories, and hopefully the healing that can come from it. Kevin Barlow, October 18, 2023 (Mi’kmaw)

Both poignant and tragic, and not always what we want to hear, the testimonials from the 46 former students in addition to the 5-chapter narrative will hopefully lead us to a better understanding of the residential school tragedy, and help the healing process to advance.
